A Thurible or Censer is a metal vessel for the ceremonial burning of incense. It is usually suspended on chains, so that it can be swung while incensing at Mass, Divine Office or Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. In it is placed hot charcoal and sweet smelling incense. It has a lid, which can be raised. this liturgical vessel is often found together with the incense boat and spoon. The shape and make of a censer is as varied as the purpose or culture for and in which it is used. Among the chief purposes of incense, and thus of a censer, is that of sacred worship.
